All Ranks in GES- Highest to the lowest ranks in Ghana Education Service

Ghana Education Service (GES) ranks and their respective qualifications have been explained in this article carefully.

The highest institution in Ghana responsible for the implementation of national pre-tertiary educational policies and programmes, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has thirteen (13) ranks.

Every rank under GES has its qualifications and duty to perform.

Blowgrade.com has highlighted in this article the ranks from the highest to the lowest and their qualifications.

Below are the ranks in GES starting from the top (highest) to the down (lowest)

  1. Director General

The Director General is the highest rank in the GES. Occupying this position is based solely on political appointment. One should have at least a minimum of fifteen (15) years of working experience with a post-first degree. Out of these 15, one must work under Education Management in a Senior Management position.

  1. Deputy Director General

This rank assists the director general in performing her/his duty. There are two deputies in GES; one responsible for Access and Quality and the responsible for Management Service. The holder of this position should be one with a minimum of twelve (12) years of post-qualification relevant work experience. Three of these twelve (12) years must be in the Direction II position.

  1. Director I

Holders of this rank are the regional or divisional directors of the GES. This rank can be obtained by long service in GES.

  1. Director II

The Director II rank is obtained as a result of long service under GES. The holders of this rank are District Directors. Their task is to supervise the shareholders in each district under their jurisdiction.

  1. Deputy Director

This rank is responsible for assisting the District Directors with their duties. One can be appointed to hold this position by virtue of long service under GES.

  1. Assistant Director I

The holders of this position are those who can be appointed as Head Teachers of Senior High Schools and as Circuit Supervisors. Holders gain appointment for this rank as a result of long service under GES.

  1. Assistant Director II

Obtaining a Master’s Degree or a Ph.D. and long service is the minimum requirement for the appointment for this rank. Head Teachers of Basic Schools are under this rank.

  1. Principal Superintendent

Being a first-degree holder and having long service under GES are the requirements for this rank. The qualifications above used to be the minimum requirements for appointment as a teacher in the Senior High School but now also the minimum requirements for appointment as a Basic School Teacher.

  1. Senior Superintendent I

A minimum of four (4) years for serving under the rank of Senior Superintendent II is required to be in this rank.

  1. Senior Superintendent II

This rank used to be the minimum requirement for an appointment as a Basic School Teacher. This rank is for teachers that are Diploma Certificate holders.

  1. Superintendent I

One must serve under GES for a minimum of four (4) years as Superintendent II to be able to be in this rank.

  1. Superintendent II

This rank is the entry point for teachers that are “Cert-A” Certificate holders.

  1. Pupil – Teacher

This rank is for teachers who got employed in Basic schools. These teachers are SSCE, WASSCE, and GCE certificate holders who were not able to pass all their examinations in college before being employed. At post (teaching at a Basic school), they will work hard to rewrite and pass their exams successfully.
