The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the 2025/2026 Academic Year Calendar for Basic Schools.
According to GES, all Basic School heads, teachers, learners and stakeholders are to take note of the approved 2025/2026 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools (Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools) and act in accordance.
Details of the 2025/226 Academic Year calendar for Basic schools are as follows:
FIRST TERM (15 WEEKS)
First in the 2025/2026 Academic Year will last for fifteen (15) weeks.
Reopening
The first term of the 2025/2026 Academic year will kickstart on 2nd September, 2025
End of Term/Closing
The term will come to an end on 18th December, 2025
Vacation
The vacation period for the first term will start from the 19th of December, 2025 through to 7th January, 2026.

Mid-Term Break
There will be a 2-day mid-term break for Basic schools in the first term.
It will start on 31st October 2025 and end on 3rd November 2025 (2 days).
SECOND TERM (12 WEEKS)
The second term will last for 3 months (i.e. 12 WEEKS)
Reopening
The reopening date for Second Term is 8th January, 2026 through to 1st April, 2026.
Closing/End of Term date
Second Term will come to an end on 1st April, 2026. Next is vacation.
Vacation
Vacation will start on the 2nd April, 2026-20th April, 2026
THIRD TERM (13 WEEKS)
The last term of the academic year, the 3rd term, will start on 21st April, 2026.
Reopening
The reopening date for the last term of the 2025/2026 academic year, 3rd Term will start on 21st April, 2026.
Vacation date/Closing date/End of Term date
The third term will come to an end on 23rd July, 2026
Vacation
Vacation starts from 24th July, 2026 until further notice. However, since GES has reverted the academic calendar, it means the next academic year, 2026/2027 will commence in September 2026.
Date to write 2026 BECE
According to the official release by GES on Saturday, July 12, 2025, the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has been scheduled to take place from 4th May to 11th May, 2026.
“GES wishes to remind all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year are to be observed accordingly. In addition, a two-day mid-term break will be observed each term for all basic schools. All heads of schools, teachers, parents, and guardians are urged to take note of these dates and ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and effective academic year,” GES’s reminder to all heads of schools, teachers, parents, and guardians.
