Colleges of Education (CoE) in Ghana awards Degree after four-year of study including Macro-Teaching.
Colleges of Education (CoE) first came into the limelight under Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah when the need for skilled personnel was needed for teaching at the basic school level after he introduced the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) programme to improve upon the education system in the country.
Colleges of Education, therefore, are institutions that train school teachers to teach students, especially in basic schools.
They offer undergraduate programmes that develop professional and very effective teachers that will be able to impact knowledge in young learners.
The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) formerly known as the Bachelor of Teaching (BT) is an undergraduate professional and educational degree programme for people who wish to pursue their teaching careers.
Which year did Degree start in Training Colleges in Ghana?
Degree in Colleges of Education (CoE) was the light in the 2018/2019 academic.
Starr FM reported on the 17th of June, 2018, that President Akuffo Addo has announced their intent to start the Bachelor of Education programme in the Colleges of Education (CoE) across the country later in September of the same year (2018) thereby scrapping the existing Diploma programme from the College of Education system.
This is to enable the implementation of the new curriculum that is to kick off in the basic schools in the 2018/2019 academic year. The president added, that it is an attempt to help transform teaching and learning to improve educational outcomes in the country.
Before this development in Teacher Education development, the Ghana Colleges of Education offered different certificate programmes over the years. They include:
Colleges of Education awards their learners with National Certificate of Education (NCE). As the name goes, this certificate is recognized nationwide irrespective of the geographical location.
- Certificate ‘B’
Introduced in 1948, the Certificate ‘B’ programme was a two-year certificate program that intended to cater to the increasing demand for more teachers in the basic schools as there was a rapid expansion in the education system. - Certificate ‘A’
Established in the year 1950 for the training of good quality middle school leavers so they can teach in the primary and middle schools and this programme lasted for seven (7) years. - Post-B Certificate ‘A’
At the time of Accelerated Development Plain in 1951, there was a rapid expansion in the education system. This called for the introduction of the Post-B Certificate ‘A’ program, a two-year programme, in 1961. This allowed Certificate ‘B’ holders to upgrade after some years of experience in the classroom. - Certificate ‘A’ (Post-Secondary)
This was also a two-year certificate programme for teachers as there was expansion in Secondary Education in 1950. This allowed secondary school leavers to train and teach in middle and secondary schools. The graduates of this program were awarded the Certificate ‘A’. - Two-year Specialist/Three-year Diploma
Under the two-year specialist programme, teachers were trained in specialized subject areas. The areas covered include; home science, physical education, music, and art.
It was later upgraded to a three-year diploma program so it could accommodate more subject areas such as English language and Mathematics. This program started in 2004 in the Colleges of Education.
