Licensure Exam Reform: Key differences in Licensure Exam reforms

The reforms in Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) bring about some important changes. These adjustments often aim to make the process more efficient and fair, ensuring that the exams accurately reflect the necessary skills and knowledge. By focusing on these improvements, the reforms can help create a more supportive and effective system for the would-be teachers /or facilitators.

Here are the key differences in the Licensure Examination for would-be teachers in Ghana.

The difference have been grouped in there categories. These categories are as follows: Time to write GTLE, Selection of centre for GTLE, and Practical component.

According to the National Teaching Council (NTC), these are the differences the reform is bringing on board for would-be teachers.

  1. Time to Write GTLE
  • GTLE THEN (OLD)

Writing the exam 1 year after completion of training – Cancelled ❌

  • GTLE NOW (NEW)

Integrated into the final year examination of the teacher training institutions. ✔️

  1. Selection of Centres for GTLE
  • GTLE THEN (OLD)

Candidates are not permitted to write in their colleges or institution or institutions of training. – Cancelled❌

  • GTLE NOW (NEW)

Candidates are permitted to write in their colleges or institution or institutions of training. ✔️

  1. Practical Component
  • GTLE THEN (OLD)

No practical or teaching practice component forms part of Pedagogy Scores. The Pedagogy questions are scored out of 100%. The teaching practice takes 30% of -Cancelled ❌

  • GTLE NOW (NEW)

Practical or teaching practice forms part of the scores. The teaching practice takes 30% the total scores, while the theoretical Pedagogy paper takes 70% of the total scores. ✔️
