The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has withdrawn one of the subjects taught at the Primary School level.

In a release dated 13th November 2023 signed by the Director-General for NaCCA Prof. Edward Appiah, the Council said they have reviewed the Primary School Curriculum where they realized the need for the withdrawal.

The release has been distributed to Hon. Minister (MoF), Hon. Deputy Minister (Mol), Chief Director (MoE), Director (Pre-Tertiary, Mol), Director General (GES), Board Chair (NaCCA), and the Deputy Director Generals (NaCCA).

The management of NaCCA said they have decided to withdraw the subject “Our World Our People” from the Standard-Based curriculum due to feedback received from teachers expressing similar observations made by the Council also.

EFFECTIVE DATE FOR WITHDRAWAL

According to the Council’s notice, the effective date for the withdrawal of the subject “OWOP” is next academic year.

REVIEW BACKGROUND FOR WITHDRAWAL

NaCCA said as part of their mandate, the Council has done a critical review and comparison of the subjects, Religious and Moral Education (RME) and Our World and Our People.

From their review of both curricula, they have noticed similar sub-strands and focal areas, indicating similarities. The said findings amount to the repetition of knowledge in both curricula.

In addition to the Council’s review, they have received feedback from teachers expressing similar observations made by the Council.

CALL FOR ACTION

NaCCA detailed “It is hoped that this action will help enrich the Standard-Based Curriculum Ghana has adopted and enable learners understanding of the curriculum, since facilitators will now be able to focus on the individual strands as captured in the Religious and Moral Education.”
