The Colleges of Education (CoE) have been structured under a new dimension to cater for all Teacher-Trainees who applied starting from 2018.

Structural demands are vital in the development of every institution’s life-span, hence, the need arise for Colleges of Education (CoE) to adjust to the global waves and demands for nurturing wards into the best for the future.

Under the new Teacher Trainee’s believed as target for development and competence training and other qualities of a professional teachers from their early stage, Colleges of Education (CoE) are tasked to run a 4-year programme dubbed Bachelor Degree (B. Ed) which replaced the old Diploma system in Teacher Training Colleges.

Graduates from Colleges of Education starting from 2022 will be awarded Degree as a certificate for studying in Colleges of Education in Ghana.

The programme is structured to equip Teacher-Trainees the needed requisite skills, classroom management, in-depth knowledge and widen their scope on education related including other educative areas that has the potential to aid classroom activities holistically and the entire development of the learner.

The programme is intended to assist the new crop of Teachers to be well-packed with how to develop the six (6) competencies and skills learners need as described by the new standardized curriculum, which will be achieved with 4 years (the years spent in college to train the teachers).

What is the structure of Degree programme in colleges?

Per the demands and scope of the new curriculum, four (4) years have been allocated to train teachers starting from 2018 for effective results (not degrading the old system), every year had a schedule to be followed appropriately.

The interesting fact about the programme is how it was packed with learning of theory. The learning of theories runs through all the four (4) years and accompanied by practice right from First Year (Level 100).

Level 100 is filled with theoretical studies and practice (FIELD EXPERIENCE) of what you have been learning to some extent. This exercise is called OBSERVATION.
Here, every activity in the school is monitored, keeping of records on them then reporting on them before that particular semester ends.

The writing of report on the programme is in line with the guidelines for the teaching profession because, the teacher-trainees will build a portfolio with what they have gather through till graduation.

In Level 200, teacher-trainees will continue what they started in Level 100 but in Level 300, they are expected to learn how to teach when they are sent to the classroom for practice.

Also in Level 300, trainees will be allowed to take partial control of teaching.

As part of the partial teaching exercise, Micro-teaching will be done in all the Colleges (on campus) to ascertain what trainees have observed, combined with new ways of delivery before teaching the learners out there during their first two years.

During the final year, Level 400, trainees will be posted/attached to stations (schools) to practice fully but with the guide of Lead Mentors and Mentors. This exercise will take place in the first semester of Level 400.

In the second semester, trainees will be engaged on Macro-Teaching Reflection, where every challenge and benefits will be accounted for during their interaction sessions when they return to College.

Take note: Each Level’s exercise is accompanied by marks and building of portfolio adequately for the teaching profession and reflection for the best practice.
