The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) in a release told the leadership and membership of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) that they cannot continue to feed Teacher Trainees 3 square meals a day from the Gh¢8.00 they pay to them.

The new development for the Colleges of Education (CoE) was signed by Dr. Samuel Addae-Boateng, the General Secretary of The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) in an official release dated June 16, 2025 to confirm the discontinuation of feeding Teacher Trainees across all the forty-seven (47) accredited public Colleges of Education (CoE).

In the notice served, PRINCOF acknowledges the Government’s commitment to providing the full feeding grant to students attending public Colleges of Education in Ghana, but they also stated their reservation, citing the inadequate feeding fee TTAG pays to feed a Teacher Trainee in a month.

“PRINCOF acknowledges the Government’s commitment to providing the full feeding grant to students attending public Colleges of Education in Ghana. It is important to remember that, out of the total monthly amount of GH¢ 400 that the Government pays to students for feeding, PRINCOF and TTAG have an arrangement in which a monthly amount of GH¢ 196, made up of GH¢ 8.00 per day per student, is deducted to feed students.”

“However, efforts by PRINCOF to persuade TTAG to increase the daily rate to a reasonable amount for students to contribute to the Colleges for feeding have been unsuccessful over the years.”

PRINCOF went on further to state that “After careful consideration and extensive consultations across all 47 public Colleges of Education, PRINCOF has concluded that it is impossible to continue feeding your members on the current GH¢ 8.00 per trainee per day.”

Not to leave Teacher Trainees stranded, PRINCOF has decided that effective Monday, June 16, 2025, all teacher trainees residing on campus will be provided with one hot meal daily.

PRINCOF has resolved to implement an adjustment to the current feeding arrangement for teacher trainees, effective Monday, 16th June 2025, due to the difficulty in sustaining the provision of three meals per day within the current allocation of GH¢ 8.00 per trainee. Thus, effective Monday (June 16, 2025), all teacher trainees residing on campus will be provided with one hot meal daily. Aside from the cost of food items, the costs of related logistics have made it financially unsustainable to continue with the current model without compromising the continuous existence of the colleges.”

“While we acknowledge the importance of adequate nutrition to trainee welfare and academic performance, we must also ensure that feeding arrangements are realistic and within our institutions’ financial capacity. The present strain on college budgets is significant, and this measure is aimed at safeguarding essential services while ensuring that at least one nutritious meal is provided daily.”

PRINCOF calls for working collaboratively with TTAG, the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and other stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions to trainee welfare challenges.

“PRINCOF remains committed to working collaboratively with TTAG, the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and other stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions to trainee welfare challenges.”

“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we implement this adjustment in the best interest of the colleges and the trainees we serve,” PRINCOF concluded.
