How to record SBA for Basic Schools: School Based Assessment at Basic Education Level
The School Based Assessment (SBA) is a designed system for collecting periodic information on pupils’ learning.
The SBA is purposely for planning improvement programmes in the performance of pupils.
After all the process of recording, the averages calculated afford any education stakeholder the opportunity to track gender differences in Pupil performance in each subject as compared to class averages.
THE TERMLY
ASSESSMENT RECORDING PLAN
Monthly test: Two monthly test (4th and 11th week ending) are to be administered and recorded as test 1&3.
These represent task 1 & 3 for fest term, 5 & 7 for second term and 9 & 11 for third term respectively. These tests are specially designed and administered to all pupils at the same time.
The teacher should therefore give enough information about the test to the pupils to make sure all are present.
Home (Group) Assignment: This is a well formulated set of questions derived from challenging and/or core objectives identified in the course of teaching or during formative assessment process that went on in the class.
Its administered at the end of the week of the term and scores recorded in column 2 (Group work). It is suggested that pupils be put into mixed ability groups for this assignment
Projects: These involve long term assignment spanning from the beginning to the end of the term. The teacher is expected to monitor the progress of the work on the project assignment regularly awarding market various stages.
When should you collect projects/works?
The final work is collected about a week to the end of the term examination for final scoring.
Take note: The marks derived from the End of the Month Tests, Home (Group) Works and projects specifically designed for the SBA should together constitute the School Based Assessment compact marked out of 60.
The SBA consist of:
- End-of-month tests.
- Group activities.
- Home work assignments (specially designed for SBA) Project.
If you find it difficult scoring all four activities out of sixty (60), you can score out of any total and later scale the total down to 50 using the conversion table provided.
How to do Conversion Calculations for/in SBA
Suppose a pupil scored 45/60 as overall SBA for the term (column 4). To convert this score to a number over 50, you have to multiply the fraction by 50. That is 45/60 × 50 = 37.5
Therefore 37.5 is recorded under 50% (A) for the pupils.
How to find Averages for pupils
To determine the boys’ averages, score for boys are added together and divided by the number of boys in the class. The same process is repeated in determining girls’ average by summing up their scores divided by the total number of girls that took the total assignment/project. For the overall average, add up scores for all pupils and divide by total of number of pupils in the class they took the test /assignment / project.
The averages afford any education stakeholder the opportunity to track gender differences in Pupil performance in each subject as compared to class averages.
Should other assignments be recorded for SBA?
It is worthy of note that the regular class exercises that are done during/after each lesson will still go on but are not to be recorded. They only help track the direction of your lessons and learning progress of pupils.
