In Ghana, National Teaching Council (NTC) is an established agency by the Ministry of Education for promoting teacher professionalism.

They (NTC) are charged to carry out their mandates via Education Act 2008 (ACT 778) to regulate & promote professionalism as the new world order. Also, to license and register Teachers according to law.

The paradigm shift in the education sector has called for the coming into force NTC in Ghana to nurture 21st-century teachers.

What is the work of NTC?

NTC has been charged by Education Act 2008 (ACT 778) to control the in and out of Teachers.

  1. As part of their regulatory duty, the Council will conduct exams periodically which will then help them to award those (Teachers) who have passed.
  2. They are to organise exams and award License. Also, NTC registers Teachers.
  3. Develop and periodically review professional practice and ethical standards for the best outcome.
  4. They are to provide a framework for the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of teachers. With this, there are structures meant to help in executing it perfectly.
  5. NTC has been tasked to work hand in hand with National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) in regulating all the 46 accredited Teacher Training in the country.

When will the 2023 NTC exams commence?

Response: As communicated by the Council in January 2023, this year’s NTC exams will start in April. However, the exact date for registration and sitting for the papers will be announced officially soon since April is the next month scheduled for the exams.

Registration is the first step toward getting your License. However, dates will be rolled out for you to write the exams before they can issue you the license.

Before the above response, NTC administrators will go through the information you provided for registration, scrutinize it, and decide whether to activate your account or not.

What is done if I provide incomplete information during registration?

If you enter or provide wrong details, the process will not complete until you fill in the vital/needed information.

After getting your license, you (teachers) are required to continue with the following:

  1. Undergo Continuous Professional Development programmes. These programmes will help you to earn credit points.
  2. Build your portfolio as time goes on.
  3. Adhere to prescribed Standards and Professional Ethics..
  4. You MUST renew your NTC license after four (4) years. However, your accumulated points among others will warrant your approval to renew it.

How will Teachers with foreign qualifications be licensed?

According to NTC, Teachers with foreign qualifications have to work the following:

They MUST:

  1. submit their certificates for verification and confirmation by National Accreditation Board (NAB) before applying for the license..
  2. pass the Ghana Teachers Licensure Examination (GTLE) also.
  3. go through an induction programme.

After meeting all the above-stated conditions, the Council will issue them the full license.

What are the requirements for In-service Teacher?


As an In-Service Teacher, what are the requirements to register on TPG for public teachers?

The following will be required from In-Service Teachers:

  1. Active e-mail address..
  2. SSNIT number..
  3. Staff ID..
  4. Scanned passport picture. It will be uploaded..
  5. Scanned evidence of some vital documents on professional training:

They are:

a. Teachers Certificate A.

b. Diploma.

c. PGDE.

d. Bachelor of Education (B.Ed).

e. M.Ed.

f. M.Phil.

g. Ph.D. (as PDF, PNG, or JPEG).

  1. Scanned first appointment letter. Make sure they are saved as PDF, PNG, or JPEG document.

What is CPD all about?

CPD is made up of mandatory programmes meant to train you the Teacher. It has essential training that every teacher is expected to attend through Professional Learning Community (PLC) programmes such as SBI, CBI, and DBI.

Rank-based programmes (Community of Practice)
These are training programmes expected to be attended by teachers in specific ranks, classes, subjects, or positions to deal with specific issues in relation to their assigned roles. (School Improvement Officers, Heads of Schools, HODs, Directors of Education, Subject Teachers, etc)

NTC Based on needs assessment, NTC has recommended the following training:

  1. Building of Portfolio.
    It is a detailed record of training programmes and activities attended by a teacher within a specified period, that is, between the issuance of the license to its renewal.
