According to a teacher and counselor, Mr. Jerry Akporhor, who is the founder of the Informed Teachers Network (ITN) platform, GES recognizes a Master’s Certificate for promotion; hence, he urged all to acquire one if they are willing.
“The Ghana Education Service (GES) also recognizes a Master’s certificate for promotion. After reaching PS, if you acquire a Master’s degree, your promotion waiting period may be reduced from four years to two.”

Detailing the increment one will be entitled to after promotion, he stated, “These promotions and upgrades only add 80, 200, 300, 500 to your salary after a whole four years of dedicated service and may not make you a millionaire — but remember, the higher you go, the better it becomes.”
“What money cannot solve, more money can solve. If you’re aiming for the top, start early and be intentional about your growth,” he urged interested teachers to take the upgrade seriously for its benefits.
Read below his statement on the topic for more insight to guide your journey with GES.
My name is Jerry Akporhor. I got employed as a teacher at age 25 after completing the College of Education with a Diploma in Basic Education.
With this diploma, I was placed on the rank of Senior Superintendent II (Professional).
All things being equal, after four years, I would qualify for promotion to Senior Superintendent I (Professional).
However, if I don’t acquire a degree to get upgraded to the rank of Principal Superintendent (PS), I would have to serve an additional four years after SS I, making it a total of eight years.
In some cases, one could spend up to six years on SS II and another six years on SS I if things don’t go as planned — turning it into a 12-year journey.
To move to the next rank, which is Assistant Director II, I would need to serve another four years.
Then, to be promoted to Assistant Director I, I would have to serve an additional four years.
Altogether, this adds up to 16 years — assuming everything goes smoothly. But remember, you can spend up to six years on a rank, so delays are possible.
To move to the rank of Deputy Director, I must serve another four years.
In total, that makes a minimum of 20 years, meaning I would attain the rank of Deputy Director around age 45.
As for Director II and Director I, those are by appointment, so I don’t usually count them among the regular ranks.
My main concern is with the Assistant Director and Deputy Director ranks. Is “Assistant” not the same as “Deputy”? Ah well — what do I know?
The real question is: how do I shorten this journey by at least four years?
The introduction of degree programs in Colleges of Education has shortened this journey for newly recruited teachers by at least eight years. These new teachers are placed directly on the Principal Superintendent rank.
For diploma holders, the key to shortening your journey is to pursue a first degree early and apply for upgrading to the PS rank.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) also recognizes a Master’s certificate for promotion. After reaching PS, if you acquire a Master’s degree, your promotion waiting period may be reduced from four years to two.
These promotions and upgrades only add 80, 200, 300, and 500 to your salary after a whole four years of dedicated service and may not make you a millionaire — but remember, the higher you go, the better it becomes.
What money cannot solve, more money can solve. If you’re aiming for the top, start early and be intentional about your growth.
The more intentional you are, the more you position yourself for leadership roles which comes benefits you can’t really quantify.
