Issue Staff IDs and pay delayed salaries of 1,500 Newly Posted Teachers -GATE to gov’t and GES

By | May 5, 2025

The Global Association of Transformational Educators (GATE), the newly recognized teachers’ union dedicated to serving the interests of teachers and educators in Ghana and beyond has called for immediate address of unpaid salaries and release of delayed Staff Identification numbers for the close to 1,500 newly recruited teachers nationwide.

At a press conference held on Monday, April 28, 2025, the leadership of the Union stated “It is deeply unfortunate that a significant number of newly recruited teachers from the Colleges of Education, who have been dutifully serving in various classrooms for the past eight (8) months, are yet to receive their rightful salaries.”

Stating mathematically, GATE disclosed the number of affected Newly Posted Teachers who have not been paid despite using the right and legal channels to address the eating-up issue.

“Current records show that approximately 1,500 of these teachers have been working without pay.

At the conference, it was furthermore stated that “While some have successfully obtained their Staff Identification Numbers (Staff IDs), a distressing number still have not, thus further delaying their validation and integration into the government payroll system.”

“Efforts by these affected teachers to seek redress through official channels, including appeals to the office of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, have yielded no tangible results. The prolonged silence and inaction suggest a worrying neglect of duty and a lack of urgency on the part of the authorities responsible.”

The silence of the government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) on this matter has left the affected teachers in severe financial distress, GATE stated and called on concerned bodies to act immediately for relief.

“This situation has left many newly recruited teachers in severe financial distress. These professionals, who are the backbone of our education sector, are now struggling to meet their basic needs, including transportation, accommodation, and daily sustenance. It is disheartening that individuals who have chosen to dedicate their lives to educating the next generation are being subjected to such unwarranted hardship.

“We wish to emphasize that this is not merely a salary issue it is a violation of the fundamental rights of workers to fair and timely compensation. It undermines the dignity of the teaching profession and threatens the morale and productivity of these young teachers.”

GATE calls for immediate action on unpaid salaries of Newly Posted Teachers.

“We, therefore, call on the following bodies to act immediately: The Ministry of Education, The Ministry of Labor, Jobs, and Employment, The Ghana Education Service (GES), the Parliament of Ghana, particularly the Select Committee on Education and Employment, including all other relevant agencies and stakeholders.”

GATE urged the listed above bodies to urgently investigate and address the delays in salary payments and the issuance of Staff IDs to newly recruited teachers.

GATE also demands a clear, public timeline for the resolution of these challenges to restore confidence and dignity in the education sector.

“The government must act swiftly to prevent further erosion of trust among teachers and to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of its employees and the future of Ghana’s education,” GATE advised the government.

To end, the leadership of GATE stated, “We stand here on behalf of our affected members and colleagues, not just to express our grievances, but to demand immediate action.”

“It is time to respect, protect, and fairly compensate the teachers who have continued to work tirelessly in service to the nation, despite these unacceptable challenges,” GATE concluded.
